Winter 2012 Draws to a Close, and Spring 2012 Begins to Bloom

First of all, if you haven’t been keeping up with YumeState or Sea Slugs lately, be sure to check out some of my latest posts:

So what are my thoughts on winter anime? There were four shows I watched all the way through, and one of them still has three more episodes left. And I thought all four shows were great! I’ve written a lot on all of them recently, so I’ll just give ultra-mini-reviews here:

Winter 2012: Favorite Characters

(Note: This post first appeared on YumeState.)

I did this sort of post for summer and fall of last year, so I might as well continue that tradition and list a few of my favorite characters from the winter 2012 anime I watched.

On Friends and Whether or Not We Should Kill Them

(Note: This post first appeared on YumeState.)

Just wanted to write up a quick post on the winter anime I’m watching before the season ends! Not much time left for all these shows, so I’m pretty excited to see how they’ll all end! Note that there may be spoilers for Kill Me Baby, Natsume Yuujinchou, and especially for Mirai Nikki and Another. Make sure you’re up to date on these shows before reading on!

I’ll start with Kill Me Baby.

The Road Paved with Good Intentions (Mirai Nikki: Ep 15-21)

Our continually-evolving protagonist Yukiteru continues to fascinate me the most out of Mirai Nikki’s bizarre cast, which may be odd considering how much he’s generally disliked. But he’s a character that’s always changing, and it’s never because he wants to. Or rather, the situation he’s been thrown in has repeatedly forced him to change himself in order to survive. The last few episodes especially have shown just how much Yukiteru has changed, and at this point it’s actually debatable just how sympathetic he is.

2011 Favorite Anime Characters

Traditionally this sort of post would be done at the beginning of January, but there were a few more shows from 2011 I wanted to try, which I hadn’t had the time to watch before. I feel ready now, so here is the first of three posts dealing with all my favorites of 2011. Today I’ll focus on characters, next time I’ll pick my top 6 shows, and then lastly I’ll cover a number of miscellaneous fun categories.

Let’s start with my three favorite anime protagonists of 2011:

The Good, Bad, and Self-Destructive Traits of Mirai Nikki’s Cast (Ep 8-14)

This show is weird.

If you’ve been keeping up with Mirai Nikki, you’ll know that the characters are generally not how they first appear to be. (Note my post analyzing the characters back at episode 7.) In this post, I’d like to analyze the trend of characters bringing about their own demise.

Fall 2011: Favorite Characters

(Note: This post first appeared on YumeState.)

The year is drawing to a close, but before I start any lists for 2011, I thought to write another post for the fall season in particular. I picked four (new) characters I liked for the summer season, so I thought I ought to do something like that for fall as well.

Mini-Reviews – Ep 2-7 of Mirai Nikki

I had written all this for my previous Mirai Nikki post… which turned out pretty long. So I decided to make a second post for today. Just some thoughts on how the series has progressed from story to story.

An Odd Bunch: Mirai Nikki’s Eccentric Cast (Ep 2-7)

The world’s most shocking monsters!

This was probably the show that intrigued me most for the fall anime season–and for good reason. The first two episodes were really intense! Mirai Nikki is an exciting show with a clever premise, fast pacing, and a unique relationship for the main two characters.
But if I were to pin one word down to describe the show now, it would probably be… bizarre.
Or eccentric, I suppose. The point is, the diary owners in this show are not normal at all, which has been troubling for many viewers. But I feel that it is precisely because these characters are so strange, that they were the ones hand-picked to receive the future-revealing diaries.

Fall 2011: My Top Five (So Far)

(Note: This post first appeared on YumeState.)

We’re around the halfway point for the fall anime season, and I thought I’d mention which shows are my favorites at the moment. So I’ll make this a list, and start with #5 and work my way up from there.

The Relateable Protagonist of Mirai Nikki (Ep 1)

I have not read the manga for this series, so the anime is entirely new to me. I went into this episode with big expectations though, since the premise sounded rather interesting: phones that tell the future, an intellectual cat-and-mouse game for the characters to kill off their opponents, and an imaginary friend(?) that turns out to be a god(?). Suffice to say the first episode covered a lot of ground, but managed to keep things interesting and exciting.

Before watching the first episode, I wasn’t quite sure who the protagonist was going to be. Most everyone online was talking about the girl on the left (Yuno), and most pictures I had seen for Mirai Nikki featured her prominently. But as the first episode makes quickly apparent, the main character is the boy on the right (Yuki). And there is good reason for this… Yuki is a character who is easy to relate to, and Yuno is not.
